Title:  Senior Fleet Engineer

Job Overview

The Senior Technical Vehicle Maintenance Engineer is responsible for providing expert technical leadership across the fleet maintenance function, ensuring the safe, compliant, reliable, and cost-effective operation of commercial vehicles and associated assets.

The role will act as the subject matter expert for vehicle engineering, maintenance standards, defect management, diagnostics, emerging vehicle technologies including electric. The postholder will work closely with branches, external maintenance providers, OEMs, suppliers, compliance teams, and operational stakeholders to drive continuous improvement and maximise fleet availability.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

• Serve as the technical authority on vehicle maintenance, engineering standards, and repair methodologies.
• Provide expert support on complex vehicle faults, repeat defects, and engineering investigations.
• Lead technical reviews and root cause analysis of vehicle failures.
• Support major incident investigations relating to vehicle safety or reliability.

Fleet Maintenance & Reliability

• Monitor fleet reliability, vehicle availability, and maintenance performance.
• Analyse repair trends, breakdown data, and technical information to identify improvement opportunities.
• Develop preventative maintenance strategies to reduce downtime and whole-life costs.
• Support the implementation of predictive maintenance and condition-based monitoring technologies.

Regulatory Compliance

• Ensure all maintenance activities comply with DVSA requirements, manufacturer standards, and health and safety legislation.
• Maintain oversight of defect management processes and rectification standards.
• Ensure maintenance records and technical documentation are accurate and auditable.

Supplier & Contractor Management

• Provide technical oversight of third-party maintenance providers and.
• Review supplier performance against contractual service levels and quality standards.
• Support maintenance tender evaluations and procurement activities.
• Challenge repair costs and recommend engineering improvements to optimise expenditure.
• Liaise with OEMs and technology partners regarding product performance, warranty issues, and technical developments.

Continuous Improvement

• Identify opportunities to improve maintenance efficiency, reliability, safety, and compliance.
• Lead engineering projects focused on fleet performance enhancement.
• Promote engineering best practice across the organisation.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Build strong relationships with branches, operational teams, suppliers, and OEMs.
• Provide technical recommendations and reports to line manager.
• Support business planning relating to fleet replacement and new technology deployment.

Skills and Experience

Essential

• Significant experience within commercial vehicle maintenance, engineering.
• Strong technical knowledge of LCV, specialist fleet, and workshop/dealership operations.
• Experience diagnosing complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic vehicle faults.
• An understanding of DVSA maintenance requirements.
• Experience managing engineering investigations and root cause analysis.
• Knowledge of fleet management systems and maintenance reporting platforms.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Full UK Driving Licence.

Desirable

• Experience with electric, hybrid, hydrogen, or alternative fuel vehicle technologies.
• Knowledge of telematics, connected vehicle systems, and predictive maintenance solutions.
• Experience of managing outsourced maintenance contracts.
• Project management experience.
• Fleet engineering qualification.

Qualifications

Essential

• HNC/HND, NVQ Level 4 or equivalent qualification in Vehicle Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
• Relevant industry-recognised maintenance qualification.

Desirable

• Degree in Engineering or related discipline.
• IRTEC accreditation.
• IMI Electric/Hybrid Vehicle qualifications.
• Membership of a recognised professional engineering institution.
